Almost lost to the Lions! At home!? Terrible. They won and so they’re managed to actually be tied for second in the division. It’s farcical that they’re still have a competitive chance, but the team is abysmal. Hasselback, hate to say it, but he’s just not good enough. Don’t get me wrong, he can be a good quarterback, but he throws too many interceptions and always at the worst times. If a team can’t keep the Lions from scoring less than 20 points than there’s just not much point in playing the game. Can’t we just fast-forward to the end, grab some decent draft picks, and try this all again next year. Sigh and double sigh. Only bright spot is a win. One mroe to tie last year and two to show some improvement. How sad is that?

Ugh.  Fake punt pass.  Only good thing to come out of yesterday.  Seahawks = Sunk.  Time to retool the whole machine.

41-0

I didn’t post anything after the Seahawks last week.  Hasselback was injured, Senaca Wallace was nothing special, and the rest of the team is various states of injured. The Seahawk season seemed like another disaster.

That’s still probably true, but there’s watching today’s 41-0 rout of the Jaguars felt good.  The 49ers lost; the Seahawks still have a shot at taking the division.  The team is too weak to go anywhere in the playoffs, but if they can get over their injuries, and more importantly, if Hasselbeck can stay healthy, than they can contend.  I’m staying with my ultimately prediction, first round playoff lost, but at least they can get that far,

And then what for next year?  They need to finally solidify the o-line, Hasselback only has  a few years left, and eventually they need to strengthen their defensive backs.  I’m not sure whether they should pick up a new franchise quarterback or stay with Hasselback and work on the offensive line.  Either works.  Hopefully Mora can work his magic in another offseason.

Anyways, hats off to a great Seahawks win.  Also go Yanks!

First weekend of NFL games!  I’m not the biggest football person, but I’ve been a Seahawk fan since time immemorial.  Each year I think they might finally win something.  That time they got to the Super Bowl, I thought my time had finally come…

Of course, they lost and badly.  The last few years have hardly been better.  Last year was an injury-filled debacle, the only upshot being a top draft pick.  They got Curry, a good outside linebacker and then got Max Ungar in the 2nd round, making for a phenomenal offseason.  Once again, I’m thinking this might be the year.

Yesterday started off shaky.  Two interceptions, no points.  If Josh Brown hadn’t fubbed the field goal, they would have been down by three.  It sure seemed this was going to be a ‘rebuilding year’.

Rest of the game though, very awesome.  3 passing TDs, a nice long run by Julius Jones, some productive defense.  I always thought that the Seahawks needed a good Tight End to take the pressure off of their wide receivers.  They also needed some good wide receivers to take pressure off their running game.  With Houshmandzadeh as their big WR threat and John Carlson finally a good catching TE, they’ve got a team that can win something.  At least that’s my prediction.

The NFC West is such a weak division (49ers, Rams, Cardinals) that they are usually guaranteed a playoff spot, but the Cardinals are supposedly a good team these days.  On Sunday Arizona struggled against the 49ers, so I’m thinking the Seahawks are the team to beat in the division once again.  I’ve been wrong before, but I’m cautiously optimistic about this year.  Put me down as a believer, at least as far as taking the Division.  My current prediction, out in the 2nd round of the playoffs against an NFC East team, but a decent showing.  That’s not quite calling us a Super Bowl lock, but c’mon, this is the Seahawks, they’ve been a bad team always.  I’ll take what I can get.

Dear Seahawks, (Can I call you that?)

For over two decades you’ve been near and dear to my heart, but you’re killing me. You were so close, so very close, to Superbowl Victory. I admit that game had some close referee calls and maybe you should have won, but you didn’t need to collapse the year afterwards in mourning. And this year…injuries I know, I know.

It’s a new year and a new season will be coming. You’ve got a few months to prepare, a draft to go through, and plenty of time to make some key trades. You’ve got a new coach with lots of potential. Let’s make this the year, eh?

First, you really need to shore up the front line. You can’t rely on Walter Jones forever. Remember when you had Steve Hutchinson? That was great. Find someone like him. We all know Hasselback (Hassel Bad Back) can’t be getting hit. (Senaca Wallace? Let him try out in preseason, eh?) Get some good linemen and you’ll find that Mo can run pretty well.

The era of the fullback is over. Mack Strong was the last of the generation. Leonard Weaver is phenomenal because he can catch and run on his own. Jones is a bit of a bum and Mo is out after this year, so use him more.

Same deal with John Carlson. He’s pretty good at tight end. Keep throwing to him.

The receiving core is solid, but definitely has room for improvement. Burleson, Engram, Obamanu, Branch. No one that good, but no one really bad. Branch is overpriced and there’s too many injuries. Get some young blood!

Defense! The defense used to be amazing. Seahawks have always had a good pass defense, but it flopped this year. Everyone is just slowing down. Even Lofa Tatupu wasn’t nearly as fast this year. Try to find a few young guys, especially fast guys for the secondary. You can test em out on special teams, which also needs a lot of work.

Finally, Kicker…losing Josh Brown was rough. He could get the ball a lot farther than this new guy. Surely you can find someone out there with a good leg? Whatever you do, don’t forget special teams. Picking up (and preventing) 10 yards here and there comes out big in the end. You don’t need Devin Hester, just someone who can push the ball and a bit farther (and defensively keep the punt returner where he stands).

You’ve got a good shot at it. Injuries took a toll this year, but you’re a good team. Arizona is finally a challenge so you’ll get some practice for the playoffs. And whatever you do, look at people’s ages. Hasselback is getting old. He’s always thrown too many picks. When you get a new player, get someone a bit calmer. Maybe a little thrower at passing, maybe not as strong, but calmer and more judicious. It’ll save us some embarrassment next time we ask for the ball and promptly throw an interception.

Best wishes,
the 12th man
