I saw Burn After Reading last night. Such a very strange movie. I feel like that much I can say without having to make decisions as to whether I actually liked it.
I think I liked it?
I’m really not sure.
I had no especial empathy for the characters and the ending(s) were sufficiently unhumorous to forbear any catharsis. The CIA director was entertaining though and the acting was good very good. It's a shame no one was really very likable except Brad Pitts character. John Malkovich is normally absolutely brilliant, but I feel like his bit was left very incomplete.
In the end, I feel like the movie could have become one of the great comedies like Kind Hearts and Coronets or Peter Sellers piece, but it failed to bring it all together. It was too dark and too incomplete. Perhaps it went over my head, but the story threads, while interesting and humorous, were ultimately unsatisifying.
