A Paris Hilton/Brittany Spears TV spot. $500 Dollars Shoes. Claims of Elitism between people running for the most powerful position on earth. Terrorist Fist Jab. America is blamed for having an apathetic population. Is this any surprise? When our presidential election is a debauched mockery of a process that people continue to think they die for is it worth the effort?
Not that this is new, of course. It just simply the first Presidential I could vote in. Sadly an election of greater importance and relevance to me personally, has yet to be more interesting or more inspiring. Obama’s trip to the rest of the world was the most entertaining event of the political season so far, if for no other reason than the rest of the world had plenty of articles on Obama’s candidacy.
In only the last decade we’ve had the Monica Lewinsky brouhaha, Katrina, Enron Scandal, Subprime Loan corruption, unfound WMDs, warrantless wiretaps, misguided firings of US Attorneys, a dramatically weakened economy, a growing healthcare burden both with prices and elderly population, a decrease is competitiveness in nearly all industries, a widening gap between rich and poor, a world-wide food shortage, debt larger than ever before by a healthy margin. Every decade has it’s trouble, but the last one seems discouraging.
The past can’t be helped much, but is it so much to ask that be a little focus as we near what may well be one of the important elections in American history, in politics. The media will be the media and It’s hard to count the previous decade as being genuinely worse than any other. That’s Era-Conceit, but it’s very tiring. I keep telling myself I’m going to post more about the election and then…I don’t. Baah!
